Internet Safety: Should your child’s sports pictures be online?

Filed in News 2 comments

safetyinternetWe all know that this is a touchy subject for all of us parents out there. And as a company that takes pictures at sporting events and posts them online for parents to purchase, why would be talking about this subject? Well, the truth is, we want the parents of their athletes to understand our process and to let them know they can always contact us if they have questions or comments. It is pretty simple to do nowadays!!!

Some parents, that we talk to at events, never question the fact that their child’s picture will be on the internet for others to see and others ask us if the gallery will be password protected. Well, we have rules in place here at GameActionShots in regards to this and we are pretty strict with following them. But we also allow the league to make a decision should they want to keep the galleries unprotected for the convenience of the parents/family member access.

Before we just show up at games to take pictures, oh wait, we don’t do that, sorry!!! We always contact the league first and we never just show up at games…another rule we have here. The reason why we do this is to first, seek the league’s permission to be on the field and yes we know that we don’t have to do this because it is public property, and second, so that they know who we are and what we are doing there. We also don’t go up and down the sidelines handing out business cards…but that is another subject that we will discuss later.

We actually request to attend a board meeting so that we can explain our process to everyone and to answer questions should they have any. We also inform them of our rules when it comes to securing the galleries, which we have several ways of doing this by the way and then we allow them to make the final decision on how they want to proceed.

Our number one goal is the safety of our children. When you see someone taking pictures at your game, do you know who that person is? We certainly understand that people will get carried away with the overall notion that someone is actually outside taking pictures at an event for goodness sake and this topic can go either way, but we would like to know your opinion.

  • Would you like to know who that person is taking the pictures if you have never seen them before?
  • Would you like the league to know who this person is first before they try to sell you pictures?
  • Do you want the picture galleries to be protected or does it not matter?
  • Thank you everyone for your support and we look forward to hearing your opinion!!

This is a good post. The web right now is just one big picture book, so you bring up some good points. A friend of mines uses SmugMug and password protects many of his personal images and left his business images open. Here is an article LH did awhile back on this subject – http://leadinghands.org/blog/?page_id=175

    #2 Ed :

Thank you Marc and thank you for the link. I tend to be very strict with these policies but I need to make it easy for the league too. I try to make them go the secure route but it sometimes does not work.

    Thanks
    Ed
